KEYNOTE SPEAKER
HAYLEY WICKENHEISER                    Opening Plenary - May 28 1:00 pm

Four-time Olympic medalist, Hayley Wickenheiser is regarded as one of the best female hockey players in the world with an uncompromised determination and dedication to her sport. Hayley is also an award winner, community leader, mentor, history-maker and an accomplished businesswoman.

It all started at age 15 in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan when Hayley was chosen for the Canadian Women’s National Team. She has since led the squad to six gold and one silver medals at the Women’s World Hockey Championships. As an Olympian, she earned a silver medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan and three consecutive gold medals at the Winter Olympics in 2002, 2006 & 2010 on home soil in Vancouver.

Sports Illustrated recently named Hayley number 20 of the Top 25 Toughest Athletes in the World. She is also a two-time finalist for the Women’s Sports Foundation Team Athlete of The Year. In January 2003, Hayley made hockey history when she became the first female hockey player to notch a point in a men’s professional game with the Kirkkonummen Salamat of the Finnish second division. More recently, Wickenheiser played in Eskilstuna, Sweden with a men’s professional division-one hockey team for the 08-09 season.

Along with hockey, Wickenheiser has mastered a number of sports. An elite softball player, she participated in the 2000 Summer Olympics as a member of Team Canada and most recently worked as a Softball Analyst with CBC’s coverage of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.

Hayley Wickenheiser lives in Calgary with her partner Tomas and son Noah.


LUCAS MAKOWSKY

Luncheon - Guest Speaker                      May 29 12:00 pm

Makowsky, a member of the Regina Speed Skating Club, began speed skating at the age of 6. Over the past 16 years, due to his determination & passion, he has progressed his way to the National Team and soon found success at the Olympic level. At his first Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver Lucas captured a GOLD medal in Team Pursuit, placed 19th in the 1500m, and 13th in the 5000m. In March at the World All-round Championships in the Netherlands, Lucas had top 10 finishes in 3 of his four distances, finishing 9th overall and capturing a SILVER medal in the 1500m. For his success in 2009, Makowsky was recently named the Sask Sport Male Athlete of the Year. While not speed skating, Makowsky is working on a double major in Chemical Engineering and Economics.

    Garry Armstrong is a Master Learning Facilitator for the NCCP Multisport Module NCCP Program in Saskatchewan and has been involved with training of many Learning Facilitators. He is the Chair of the Coaches Association of Saskatchewan and has been a member of the board for several years. Garry is a retired School Administrator and spent 34 years in the Education Profession. He as worked closely with the development of the Aboriginal Coaches and Officials program.


    DENNIS BEERLING

    Dennis is a Master Learning Facilitator for “Intro to Competition” modules and an Advanced Learning Facilitator for “Competition Development” modules for the NCCP Multisport program in Saskatchewan. He has been a facilitator for NCCP programs for over 30 years, has piloted three of the Comp-Dev modules for Canada and has been involved in training many Learning Facilitators. Dennis is presently on the Board of the Coaching Association of Saskatchewan and serves on its Aboriginal Advisory Committee. He has over 30 years of coaching experience in softball and is a certified level three coach. He is an international official in track and field. Dennis is member of the Saskatchewan and Saskatoon Sports Halls of Fame and is a retired school Administrator.


    KAREN CRAVEN

    Karen has a BSc. (Anat), BSc. (PT), Dip Sport (PT) and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). She competed as an athlete on Canada's National Junior Softball Team at the 1991 World Championships, prior to traveling as a sport physiotherapist with Canada's National Women's Softball Team. Karen is a guest lecturer and lab instructor in the School of Physical Therapy at the University of Saskatchewan, and a course instructor for the Canadian Sport Center’s Sport First Aid and Sport Taping Programs, offered in various communities throughout Saskatchewan. Karen consults regularly for the Canadian Sport Centre Saskatchewan, in addition to providing sport physiotherapy for athletes registered with Gymnastics Canada’s Saskatoon-based Regional Training Centre (Men and Women). Through her nine years in private practice, Karen has also worked as a sport physiotherapist for the Canadian Hockey Association, Saskatchewan Hockey Association, Softball Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan Sailing Association and numerous local sporting events. Within the community, Karen designs and implements strength and conditioning programs for the Saskatoon Goldfins Swim Club, Saskatchewan Provincial Men's and Women's Soccer Teams, and both Regional and National Training Centre soccer athletes.


    MELANIE HEADRICK

    This session is provided on behalf of the Sport Medicine Science Council of Saskatchewan

    A graduate of the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Physiotherapy, Mel Headrick brings a wealth of personal and professional sport experience to her physiotherapy practice. She is a Level 1 certified Orthopaedic and Manual Therapist, and obtained her certificate in Sport Physiotherapy in 2009. Prior to acceptance into physiotherapy, Mel attended McMaster University, where she was a member of the women’s varsity rugby team. In addition to her own athletic experiences, first competing nationally as a junior, and playing with a senior women’s club team, she coached an under-19 year old team for over ten years. During the rugby off-season, Mel can be found relaxing at the curling rink, where she plays in a women’s league. As a physiotherapist, Mel has provided sport physiotherapy coverage for provincial and national level football, rugby, field hockey, figure skating, wrestling, fencing and soccer events. She has travelled as a team physiotherapist for Rugby Saskatchewan, a position she has also held with the University of Alberta’s women’s varsity field hockey team. She provided coverage at the 2009 BMO National Figure Skating Championships, and the 2005 Jeux Canada Games in a variety of sports. As a certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, Mel designs and implements programs for junior, senior, and masters’ level athletes.


    HEATHER HYNES

  • Myths & Realities about Performance Enhancing Products - May 28 2:00 pm
    This session is provided on behalf of the Sport Medicine Science Council of Saskatchewan

    Heather is a doping control officer with the CCES and a Registered Dietician and Sports Nutrition consultant with the Sport Medicine and Science Council of Saskatchewan. She completed her undergraduate degree in the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition at the University of Saskatchewan in 2002 and started working with the Sport Medicine and Science Council in May 2002. Heather has worked with numerous provincial teams, as well as athletes at the national and international level. She has been a member of three Canada Games teams, as an athlete, a manager and mission staff for Saskatchewan. Heather is currently working on her master’s degree in the College of Kinesiology at the University of Saskatchewan in the area of sports nutrition and exercise metabolism.


    DR. DON CLARK

    Don is recognized as one of Canada’s experts in the area of seasonal and yearly planning for training programs. He has served as a Coaching Association of Canada consultant for the development of the NCCP Competition – Introduction, Competition – Development and the new Coach Diploma program. Don is a Master Learning Facilitator for the NCCP and has presented CAC’s NCCP programs nationally and internationally. Granted Professor Emeritus at the University of Regina, Don currently serves as the Director of the National Coaching Institute – Saskatchewan.


    CAROLYN TRONO

  • The Role of the Coach in LTAD - May 28 2:00 pm

    Carolyn works at the Director of Coach Education for Rowing Canada Aviron and has been a key driver in the RCA’s Long-term Athlete Development project. She was worked with a number of organizations to develop the LTAD overview document for Special Olympics Canada, Canadian Broomball Federation, Tennis Canada, Bowling Federation of Canada and Bowls Canada Boulingrin. Carolyn graduated from the National Coaching Institute, worked as a coach and then technical director for Ontario Rowing Association and Manitoba Rowing Association. She understands the importance of the coach in the implementation of LTAD.

    Joe Daniels currently works for Sask Sport Inc. as a Community Consultant working in the area of Aboriginal Sport Development. Joe been coaching on and off for the last 20 years. He has coached athletics, soccer, hockey, lacrosse, basketball and volleyball. Currently trained as a Learning Facilitator in the NCCP Introduction to Competiton Part A & B, Aboriginal Coaching Module, Lacrosse Technical, and Intro to Coaching. Joe resides in Regina with his wife and four children. In his spare time, Joe is involved with his children’s sports (judo, soccer and basketball) and has been an active volunteer with Regina KidSport™.

    Sarah offers an extensive background in Kinesiology (movement science) having completed her Masters degree in exercise psychology in 2007. Currently, Sarah is employed as the Program Coordinator for Saskatchewan Athletics where her portfolio focuses predominantly on overseeing the Run, Jump, Throw, SK Excellence, and Easter Camp programs. The position allows her to work in provincial sport from the grassroots level extending to high performance, and even with masters athletes. Additionally, Sarah has worked with the Sport Medicine and Science Council of Saskatchewan since 2007 as a mental training consultant. She has primarily worked with ringette, athletics and triathlon, swimming, basketball, and figure skating groups. Sarah is also a Certified Exercise Physiologist (CEP); a certified yoga instructor since 2009; and is currently working towards completion of her Level 3 coaching credentials in athletics (Sprints/Hurdles, and Jumps).

    Bruce Craven is a graduate of the School of Physical Therapy at the U of S. He also has a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, a Master of Science and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Sport Physiotherapy. Bruce has his Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification. Bruce is an Associate Clinical Professor in the School of Physical Therapy and a Sessional Lecturer in the College of Kinesiology at the U of S. Bruce has o had opportunity to work with athletes in over 30 different sports, competing at the provincial, national, world and Olympic levels. At the national level, Bruce has worked as a consultant with the National Figure Skating Team, National Sailing Team and the Canadian Hockey Association. Bruce has been part of the Medical Team for 4 Canada Games and the1999 Pan Am Games.


    LISA THOMAIDIS

  • Coaching Female Athletes - May 28 3:45 pm

    Thomaidis completed her 12th season with the U of S Huskies Women's Basketball Team this year coaching her team to a bronze medal at the CIS National Championships. Her success as a leader for the Huskies has earned her three Canada West Coach of the year awards (2003- 04, 2005-06, 2008-09) and an induction into the McMaster University Hall of Fame in October 2006. In 2008-09, she became the first women's basketball coach at the U of S to be named the CIS Coach of the Year. Later that year, she was honoured with a YWCA Woman of Distinction Award. Thomaidis has been an assistant coach with the Canadian Women's National Team since 2001. Thomaidis coached at the 2006 World Championships, 2 PanAm Games as well as Olympic qualification tournaments. Prior to the UofS, Thomaidis played two seasons of professional basketball in Europe in the Greek 1st Division. As an athlete at McMaster University she was a three-time OUA All-Star, and was on the Dean's Honour List for three years. She finished her career with McMaster by winning the OUA Coaches Award of Excellence.

    JJ has been involved with all levels of sport for over 20 years as an athlete, coach, and sport administrator. JJ has many successful years with regards to connecting with both grassroots and high level Aboriginal athletes, coaches, and managers. He is NCCP certified in Softball, Football, Basketball, and Gymnastics. JJ has had success on all venues both provincially, nationally and internationally. JJ has researched holistic best pratices that have been proven to successfully make the connection with Aboriginal athletes and the sport environment. JJ is a motivational speaker and has a unique flair for the power of story-telling through 'sport stories'.

    As a consultant in Sport Psychology with the Saskatchewan Sport Medicine and Science Council, Ralph works with individuals, teams and groups in a variety of sports, from the grassroots to international and professional levels. His work in the performance psychology and competition preparation areas involves athletes, coaches, parents, officials and administrators. Ralph also works with the Canadian Sport Centre Saskatchewan to deliver stress management and career workshops, and with The National Coaching Institute to facilitate Sport Psychology and Leadership modules to Level 4/5 coaches at the local, provincial and national levels.

    Danielle is a Registered Dietitian and Sport Nutrition Consultant with the Sport Medicine and Science Council of Saskatchewan. Since graduating from the University of Saskatchewan in 1994 she has worked as a private practice dietitian and has consulted with the Sport Medicine and Science Consultant since 1999. Her experience includes work with athletes at the regional, provincial and national levels in Saskatchewan, British Columbia and California. In addition to running her own private practice, she also is employed as a Public Health Nutritionist in the Saskatoon Health Region.

    Tom received his B.A. (Psychology) from the University of Manitoba, his M.S. (Sport and Recreation Management) from the University of Idaho and his Ph.D (Health and Exercise Psychology) from the University of Saskatchewan. As a coach at the University of Saskatchewan, Tom was chosen CIS and Canadian Volleyball Association (CVA) Coach of the Year in 1987. Athletically, Tom was a member of the 1976 Canadian Olympic volleyball team. He was a member of two Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) national champions while playing volleyball at the University of Manitoba and a former athlete of the year at that institution. Tom has been heavily involved in delivering mental training services to provincial sport organizations. Since November 2007, Tom has been the Director of Research and Graduate Studies for the College of Arts and Science at the U of S. Tom grew up in Comox, B.C. and is of Haida descent. One quarter of his heritage originates on the Haida Gwaii First Nation, Queen Charlotte Islands. For fun, Tom coaches his son’s volleyball, basketball and baseball teams and runs along the riverbank as often as he can.

    Amy is currently employed by Sask Sport Inc. as the Program Coordinator for Aboriginal Coaches & Officials Program. She is a NCCP Level 3 Synchro Coach as well as a trained NCCP Learning Facilitator. Amy is a Workshop Facilitator for the CAWWS Aboriginal Women: Building on our Strengths and has coached for 10 years.


    LYLE SANDERSON

    Lyle Sanderson, a NCCP Level 5 coach started coaching the U of S Track & Field Program in 1965. He was the head coach for 39 years before retiring in 2004. Under his direction, the Huskies captured 33 Canada West and 10 CIS Championships, and 4 Canada West & 1 CIS Championship in Cross Country. Lyle has been named to the coaching staff of our National Track & Field teams for three Olympic Games, as well as many other World, Commonwealth & Pan American Games. Sanderson has been an invaluable contributor to the NCCP & coach education in Saskatchewan, Canada & around the world. Lyle Sanderson has been inducted into many Hall of Fames and won prestigious awards too numerous to mention. In addition to being an associate professor at the U of S - Kinesiology, Lyle has dedicated much of his time to enhancing sport not only in Saskatchewan but world-wide.


    DR. PHIL CHILIBECK

  • Fundamental Weight Training for Young Athletes - May 29 1:15 pm

    Phil Chilibeck is a professor in the College of Kineisology at the University of Saskathchewan. He has been on faculty there for 13 years. Phil received his B.Sc. from the University of Ottawa, his M.Sc. from McMaster University and his Ph.D. from the University of Western Ontario. After his Ph.D. he did a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Alberta before coming to Saskatchewan. He has published extensively on the area of strength conditioning and his research has been featured in Men's Health, Shape, Reader's Digest, Chatelaine, and Prevention magazine, and in the Saskatoon StarPhoenix. Phil served as a reviewer for the position statement from the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology on safety and effectiveness of resistance training in youth.


    LISA BENZ

    Lisa is on staff as a Mental Trainer with the Sports Medicine & Science Council of Saskatchewan. Lisa grew up in Cochrane, Alberta and obtained her B.Kin. from the University of Calgary and later her Masters of Arts Degree in Sport Psychology (Human Kinetics) from the University of Ottawa. She has obtained various academic awards, scholarships, and has presented at numerous conferences. She is a competitive distance runner and enjoys traveling.


    ASTRID BAECKER

    Astrid played soccer at the local club, high school, and provincial levels while growing up in Regina. She was part of a successful club program that saw her team win numerous provincial titles and represent Saskatchewan at Club Nationals three times. After high school, Astrid played in the German Women club system and then played college soccer in New Mexico and for the U of R Cougars. She represented Saskatchewan at the World Masters Games in Sydney, Australia, in October 2009. Astrid received her first coaching certification at the age of 16 and has since been actively coaching recreational through to elite soccer ever since. She was an assistant coach of the U of R Cougars and is a holder of a National B License in Soccer. Astrid is the Owner/operator of Bitten Appetizer and Dessert Bistro in Regina and was formerly employed by the Saskatchewan Soccer Association as director of operations and promotions.


    LAURIE WACHS

    Laurie has twenty five years of coaching experience as Head Coach of the Saskatoon Aqualenes Synchronized Swimming Club and High Performance Coach for Synchro Saskatchewan’s High Performance Program. Laurie is a fully certified Level 3 Coach, and level 1-3 Synchronized Swimming Course Conductor. Laurie Wachs, as the recipient of the 3M Coaching Canada Award in the Development Sport—Female Category for Development Sport for outstanding contribution to coaching and athlete development. In 2004, Laurie Wachs was inducted into the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame as a “Sport Builder”. Most recently Laurie received the2009 “Coach Dedication Award – Female” at the Saskatchewan Sport Awards.

    Kirby was born and raised in Saskatoon and attended Holy Cross High School and the University of Saskatchewan. He is currently working on his Masters in Ed. Admin. Currently, at Bishop Mahoney High School, Kirby is a Physical Education Teacher, Physical Education Department Head, Athletic Director, SSSAD Representative, head senior football coach, basketball tournament coordinator, and track and field coach. Also, Kirby is Saskatoon’s Local President of the SSSAD. Kirby is an inductee of the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the 1991 Saskatoon Hilltops National Champion team.


    AUDREY GAVLAS

    Audrey is originally from Taber, Alberta and attended the University of Lethbridge. While obtaining her Bachelor of Education Degree, she played for the U of L Pronghorn Women’s Basketball Team. For seven years she taught and coached many successful teams in Prince Albert. She coached girls’ basketball at the Junior High level for many years in Clavet and is currently coaching Track and Field. She has coached at the community level – soccer, baseball and basketball, at the provincial level with BSI, and is currently coaching her two sons through the Saskatoon Minor Basketball program.


    GREG JOCKIMS

    Greg Jockims 12th season as head coach of the U of S men’s basketball team was one to remember as his team captured the CIS National Championship, the first men’s basketball title in U of S history. The Swift Current native played high school basketball at Mount Royal Collegiate then moved on to play with the Huskies for five seasons, reaching the CIAU Championship twice. Jockims was the head coach of the University College of Cape Breton from 1994-98, prior to that he was an assistant coach at the University of Victoria (1992-94) and for the Huskies (1989-91). Since taking over the Huskies as head coach in 1998, Jockims has led the Huskies to three Canada West bronze medals. They made an appearance in the CIS Championship in 2005-06 and capture the CIS title in 2009-10.


    CLAY DEBRAY

  • NCCP Aboriginal Coaches Manual Workshop - May 30 8:30 am

    Clay DeBray is currently employed as the Métis Community Sport Consultant with Sask Sport Inc. DeBray, has extensive experience in the amateur sport system in Saskatchewan. In this position, DeBray focuses his work on Métis sport development at the grassroots level. Prior to joining Sask Sport Inc., DeBray was a teacher at the Poundmaker and One Arrow First Nation and a Director of Youth, Sports, Culture and Recreation for the Battlefords Tribal Council. DeBray has been a coordinator at the North America Indigenous Games and a co-chair at the Saskatchewan First Nation Summer Games and has coached Team Sask at the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships. An accomplished athlete, DeBray has played at the national and international levels in both hockey and softball.
